I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Anti Social Behaviour, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. It has been a very busy, yet very proactive week for our town centre officers. We have lots of good work to share, from multiple arrests, vehicle seizures and stop and searches, we have lots to publish in this Herts Connected weekly update.
Stevenage Town Centre Police Officers had a “smashing” job last week assisting North Herts Police with an arrest enquiry.
Police had attended an address on Seebohm Close in Hitchin acting upon an arrest enquiry for a wanted male. During this time, Police saw movement inside of the address with the occupants refusing to open the door. Thankfully, we made swift work of the door which was left in pieces and two males were extracted from the address.
Drey Stapleton, aged 24 of Florence Street, Hitchin was charged with Failure to appear and was taken to the next available court.
The male that was harbouring the wanted male inside of the address was arrested for Obstructing a Police Constable and Possession with Intent to Supply a Class C Drug (Nitrous Oxide) after multiple cannisters were found at the address at the time of the arrest.
A male was arrested in Stevenage town centre for two shopliftings.
Dean Jeffery, aged 45, of no fixed abode, was arrested in Stevenage town centre on Thursday 17 September on suspicion of theft of meat products from Sainsburys between 28 July and 29 July.
Jeffery was charged with both offences and will be attending Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 16 December for a hearing.
A man was arrested for failure to appear at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 16 September after officers sighted him in town. He had failed to attend court in July for several offences. He was taken to the next available court for his hearing.
A woman has been arrested for theft from a shop.
Sonia Younas, aged 37, of Lonsdale Road, Stevenage was arrested on suspicion of theft from the Asda petrol station on Lytton Way on Monday 27 July. £50 worth of vapes and beer were taken.
She was charged and bailed to appear at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 16 December.
Operation lockup is a force led initiative which focuses on arresting offenders who have been wanted by the Police for extended periods of time. As we do tend to hunt for offenders who are outstanding, some get a change of heart and want to do the right thing. Last week, we had two wanted males’ hand themselves in at Stevenage Police Station for failure to appear with one of them being wanted in Wales. They both have been sent to court in relation to their matters. I am glad that they have done the right thing and have stepped up.
Town Centre officers were conducting proactive patrols when they came across a car driving at half of the speed limit, weaving in and out of white lines and a rear brake light out. Police stopped the motor and spoke to the driver and upon doing so, discovered that the driver was operating the motor with an expired licence. As a result, the driver was reported for the following offences;
- Driving otherwise in accordance with a driver’s licence
- Driving without insurance
- Driving without due care and attention
- Driving with a defected brake light
The vehicle was seized and the driver will be attending court in the coming months for the offences.
Whilst conducting proactive patrols, Police came across a moped driving with their high beams on, dazzling other motorists. The moped was pulled over and when conducting checks on the vehicle, it quickly became apparent that the driver was operating the motor without the correct insurance. The moped was seized with the driver being reported for driving without insurance and will be attending court in the coming months for the offence.
Operation Scootherts continues to see more and more seizures of E-scooters and illegal E-bikes this week. As a result, we have seized the following;
- X2 E-scooters
- X1 E-bike
All drivers have been reported for the relevant offences and will be attending court in the coming months to receive points and fines with all E-scooters and E-bikes being crushed.
 Tackling antisocial behaviour can be a complex issue, and one which requires input and action from more than just the police. The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 aims to put victims first, giving power to local people and enabling professionals to find the best solutions for their local area. The act provides the police, local authorities and other local agencies with flexible tools and powers that they can use to respond quickly and effectively to antisocial behaviour. These include: - civil injunctions.
- criminal behaviour orders.
- public spaces protection orders.
- community protection notices.
- dispersal powers.
- closure powers.
The act also includes measures such as the Community Remedy and antisocial behaviour case reviews which empower victims and communities to have a say in the outcome of their reports and hold agencies to account.
